Southern Appalachian Botanical Society
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTRIBUTORS

Editorial Policy:

CASTANEA, The Journal of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society, publishes papers relating to the botany of the Eastern United States.  Manuscripts must be original work, not previously published, and not currently submitted to any other journal.

Manuscripts:

Authors are requested to follow the style in recent issues of CASTANEA.  Each manuscript, including figures, should be submitted to the Managing Editor as both a hard copy and by email (lmellichamp@carolina.rr.com) in a word processing file.  Prepare manuscripts using a current version of MS Word or WordPerfect for PC.  All text, Literature Cited, Figure Legends, and Tables should be included in the file. Include Figures in the file and also submit the originals as hard copies.  Final Figures will also be requested in TIFF, EPS, or PDF format.  Manuscripts must be prepared with at least 1-inch margins, double-spaced on one side of the paper throughout, and be on good quality 8½ x 11 inch paper.  All pages must be numbered; and, all lines numbered on each page.  The sequence of material in the manuscript should be: Title Page with Author's name and address (including email address of the corresponding Author as a footnote), Abstract, Body of the Manuscript, Acknowledgments, Literature Cited, Figure Legends, Tables with Table Headings, and Figures.

  1. The Abstract of 250 words or less must be concise and descriptive of the information contained in the paper.  It must be complete in itself without reference to the body of the paper.
  2. The Body of the Manuscript may, depending upon the specific nature of the paper, include the following sections:  Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Summary; followed by the Acknowledgments, and Literature Cited. All Tables and Figures, as well as References, must be cited in the text.
  3. All References must be arranged alphabetically by Author's last name.  In the Body of the Manuscript, References are to be cited by Author and publication date.  Specific journal abbreviations must follow Botanico-Periodicum-Huntianum; see: http://asaweb.huh.harvard.edu:8080/databases/publication_index.html  If in doubt, include the full citation.  Example reference formats are given on the SABS Web Page; see: www.newberry-college.net/SABS/Castanea/LitExamp.htm
  4. Each Table, together with its heading, must be double-spaced, numbered in Arabic numerals, and set on a separate page.  Table format should follow a recent issue of CASTANEA.  Internal lines and shading should not be used.
  5. Figures based on line drawings may be submitted as photocopies.  Figures based on half-tones must be submitted as 5x7 or 8x10 inch unmounted glossy prints.  All Figures must be numbered in Arabic numerals.  Figure Legends should be grouped on a separate page.

Species Lists:

It is expected that Authors with species lists voucher their study specimens in a public herbarium using the accepted acronym; see: http://www.nybg.org/bsci/ih/ih.html

Scientific Names:

The first time the scientific name of a plant is given in the text the authority should be included.  Authorities may be omitted where the name and authority are given subsequently in a floristic list.  If you use a scientific name in the abstract, omit the authority.

Measurements and Units:

All measurements should be expressed in International System (SI) (i.e., metric) units; see, http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/units.html

Page Charges:

Authors are charged  $40 per printed page.  Charts, photographs, color figures, and tables may incur extra charges.  Arrangements for payment of charges must be made with the Managing Editor at the time of manuscript submission.  Authors, who are members of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society, may request 3 free pages if they do not have full institutional support.  An invoice is sent upon final acceptance of a revised manuscript, when the paper is in proof form.

URLS:

Authors may include the URL for websites that contain material ancillary to their paper.  This could be colored illustrations, extensive databases, and similar topics relevant to the research discussed.  Information essential for the paper must be included in the manuscript, not referred to in the website.

Review:

Every manuscript submitted will be reviewed by at least two referees and a member of the Editorial Board.  Decision of acceptance or rejection of the manuscript is the responsibility of the Editorial Board.

Revisions:

Revised manuscripts should be returned promptly.  Manuscripts not returned within six months may be considered new submissions.  Authors should contact the Editor for the manuscript if they expect revisions to require more than six months.

Proof and Reprints:

Page proofs will be sent to the Author with an order blank for reprints.  The page proofs must be returned to the Managing Editor within 48 hours of their receipt.  The reprint order is sent by the Author back to the printer, Allen Press Inc., Lawrence, Kansas.  Alterations in the proofs are expensive; changes made by the author in proof, other than those due to printer's error, will be charged to the Author at the rate of $3.00/change.  Proofs not returned by the Author or Author-designated intermediary will be edited by the Managing Editor and printed in the slated issue.
